EU Parliament Backs Abortion Access Initiative across Member States

The European Union parliament has officially endorsed the 'My Voice, My Choice' citizens' initiative, permitting women to terminate pregnancies in member states with fewer restrictions, at no cost. This measure targets residents of nations like Malta and Poland, where stringent laws severely limit abortion access.

Despite a trending increase in abortion accessibility across Europe, including the UK and France, the initiative has met substantial resistance. Far-right parties, which staunchly oppose abortion, along with some centre-right entities, argue that the proposal infringes on national sovereignty and traditional values. The proposal passed in parliament with a vote of 358 to 202.

Supporters assert this initiative will mitigate unsafe abortion practices and aid women lacking financial resources for travel and procedures. As the European Commission deliberates its adoption, contention remains, catalyzed by anti-abortion organizations arguing for heightened support for maternity over abortion services.
