Authorities have dismantled illegal opium plantations worth Rs 1.91 crore in Similipal National Park, Odisha. The venture, discovered deep within the protected area, was carried out without regard for forest conservation and wildlife protection laws. Police reported the operation early Monday.

Ajoint effort by police, excise, and forest departments revealed two illegal poppy sites occupying a total of 1.09 acres near Jashipur. The area, typically undisturbed by humans, is known to be home to tigers and other wildlife. Law enforcement spotlighted the gravity of violating environmental guidelines through such illicit activities.

While 95,850 opium plants have already been destroyed, investigations are ongoing to identify culprits overseeing the clandestine cultivation. Two legal cases were initiated at Jashipur police station as authorities endeavor to understand how the cultivation was executed inside the national park boundaries.
