Waheed Ur Rehman Para, a PDP MLA, has voiced sharp criticism against the National Conference-led government for what he describes as a lack of empathy in its new vision document concerning the mental health crisis in Kashmir. He highlights alarming statistics revealing high levels of depression and trauma among the region's youth.
In the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, he urged the government to shift its focus from solely law and order to addressing the humanitarian crisis. He argued that healing and reconciliation should be at the forefront of the government's agenda, particularly given the staggering number of patients seeking mental health support.
Alongside his criticism, Para has tabled the 'Jammu and Kashmir Reconciliation, Trauma Healing and Dignity Bill, 2026.' This proposed legislation seeks to formally recognize and address the psychological impacts of decades of instability in the region and aims to provide mechanisms for emotional and social rehabilitation.
