NCP legislator Amol Mitkari has called for the renaming of Maharashtra's flagship Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana to honor the late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Fondly remembered as Ajitdada, Pawar was highly regarded among women in the state, often receiving numerous rakhis during his travels.
A plane crash claimed Pawar's life, along with four others, on January 28. The proposed renaming aims to pay tribute to his legacy and impact. Initially announced by Pawar, the scheme began in July 2024, offering Rs 1,500 monthly to women aged 21 to 65 via direct bank transfers.
This initiative was instrumental in the BJP-led Mahayuti's victory in the 2024 assembly elections. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde assured that the financial aid will not only continue but also potentially increase to Rs 2,100, acknowledging its significant benefits for women.
