Call for Gender-Sensitive Courtroom Reforms Under POCSO Act

Rajya Sabha MP Ujjwal Deorao Nikam suggests the government allow flexibility in appointing male judges for cases under the POCSO Act to ease psychological discomfort for male child victims while testifying. He emphasizes the importance of sensitive handling to uphold the Act's spirit and ensure justice.

In a significant suggestion during Tuesday's session, Rajya Sabha MP Ujjwal Deorao Nikam highlighted the need for gender-sensitive administrative reforms in POCSO Act cases. He urged the government to consider allowing male judges in certain cases to ease the psychological burden faced by male child victims while testifying.

Nikam, a nominated BJP member, emphasized that male child victims often feel hesitant and embarrassed narrating sensitive incidents to female judges. This hesitation can lead to incomplete testimonies or even witnesses turning hostile, undermining the prosecution and justice for the child victim.

Stressing the need for sensitivity, Nikam proposed consulting with the judiciary to provide limited flexibility in judge assignments. His suggestion aims to ensure that the Act's child-friendly justice spirit is fully realized, possibly through new SOPs and mechanisms, irrespective of the victim's gender.
