Director Fined Over SGD 1 Million for Customs Fraud
Thiyambarawatta Subash Indrajith, director of Singapore-based Concordway, was fined over SGD 1 million and jailed for two months for under-declaring vehicle imports. Indrajith admitted to evading SGD 161,251 in duties by falsifying invoices. He faces further imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine by May 25.
An Indian-origin director named Thiyambarawatta Subash Indrajith, associated with a Singaporean firm Concordway, has been penalized by the court after being found guilty of customs violations. The director received a fine exceeding SGD 1 million and was sentenced to two months in prison for under-declaring vehicle imports.
The court found that Subash evaded over SGD 161,251 in taxes on 34 imported vehicles, including a Porsche. Alongside the nine charges under the Customs Act to which he pleaded guilty, ten additional charges were considered during sentencing. These included fraudulent attempts to evade Goods and Services Tax and aiding in false declarations.
Subash's involvement included collaborations with overseas suppliers to generate false invoices, thereby reducing declared vehicle values and avoiding rightful duty payments. This scheme came to light following an importer's low declared value submission, triggering investigations. Subash has until May 25 to settle the fine, failing which he risks a further 12-month imprisonment.
