US-China Tensions Mount Over High-Profile Detentions
President Donald Trump indicated that Chinese President Xi Jinping might release a detained pastor, but expressed doubts about the release of jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai. Lai's case highlights global concerns over Hong Kong's national security laws. Meanwhile, Pastor Jin Mingri and other clergy face detention in China's crackdown on Christianity.
In a fresh twist to U.S.-China relations, President Donald Trump revealed that Chinese President Xi Jinping is contemplating the release of a detained pastor. Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One, noted, however, that the case of jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai remains problematic.
Lai, a prominent figure, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in February on charges of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces, sparking worldwide criticism. His case has become a focal point of international concern over China's security crackdown in Hong Kong.
In a related development, the founder of Zion Church, Pastor Jin Mingri, was arrested with nearly 30 others in the largest crackdown on Chinese Christians since 2018, following restrictions on unauthorized religious activities imposed by China's top religion regulator.
