Justice Yashwant Varma, embroiled in controversy over unaccounted cash discovered at his residence, has resigned amid impeachment proceedings. Justice Yashwant Varma, facing impeachment proceedings after unaccounted cash was found at his official residence, resigned from his position at the Allahabad High Court. The resignation, deemed formal upon submission to the President, means that Varma is now a private citizen, making impeachment proceedings void.
A Judges Inquiry Committee, probing allegations against Varma, submitted its findings to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The investigation was initiated after a March 2025 incident, where firefighters discovered burned currency in Varma's Delhi residence. In July, over 200 MPs had signed a motion to impeach him.
The fate of the committee's report rests with Parliament. Experts clarified that even with Varma's resignation, the committee's work proceeds independently. The report will be tabled in the upcoming monsoon session, initiating further deliberations by Parliament on this complex issue.
