The Delhi government has initiated changes that permit private auditors to verify fire safety compliance in buildings. These amendments were released in the Delhi Gazette by the Home Department, detailing the involvement of third-party 'Fire Safety Auditors' authorized to issue compliance certificates.

The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) will continue issuing such certificates under the updated framework. New rules categorize auditors into three levels based on experience and education, assigning unique identification numbers to curb conflict of interest. Auditors are also restricted from certifying the same building consecutively, enhancing transparency.

A significant development includes the requirement for buildings to install IoT-based Automated Continuous Monitoring Systems to ensure real-time surveillance of firefighting mechanisms like hydrant pumps and smoke detectors. Initially, alerts will be sent to building owners and auditors, escalating to DFS for critical alarms.

A new Fire Prevention Cell, led by a Deputy Chief Fire Officer, has been established at DFS headquarters to review building plans and oversee adherence to fire safety regulations. The amendments also define various building classifications requiring mandatory fire clearances and simplify the fee payment process through online gateways.
