In a tragic incident early Friday morning, a bus collided with vehicles near a work zone on Interstate 95 in Stafford County, Virginia. This unfortunate event resulted in five deaths and injuries to 44 individuals, including the bus driver.

The accident occurred around 2:35 am, impacting southbound traffic near Quantico. Authorities report that all fatalities were from vehicles struck by the bus. Additionally, 34 passengers were present on the bus. The bus driver, Jing S Dong, faces pending charges as authorities continue their investigation.

Peyton Vogel from the Federal Transit Administration, present at the scene, described the crash as 'absolutely tragic.' Assistance was provided to patients at multiple hospitals, including 19 at Mary Washington Healthcare. Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board has initiated a safety investigation to understand the accident's causes better.

The bus operator, E&P Travel Inc., has a satisfactory safety record. Despite the southbound lanes reopening by noon, residual traffic congestion remains. Discussions on enhancing interstate passenger bus safety continue, stressing the importance of driver-related safety measures.
