India Commemorates Ziaur Rahman's Role in Bangladesh's Liberation

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka commemorated Ziaur Rahman's influential contribution to the 1971 Liberation War, recognizing his efforts on the 45th anniversary of his passing. India emphasized its longstanding allegiance with Bangladesh, recalling Zia's radio address that galvanized the populous towards independence.

In his historic 1971 broadcast, Zia announced Bangladesh's independence in the name of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman amid Pakistan's Operation Searchlight. His call to arms rallied Bengalis against oppression. Post-independence, Zia established the BNP and held the presidency until his assassination in 1981. The party, later led by his widow Khaleda Zia and their son Tarique Rahman, remains influential.
