American Citizen Detained at India-Nepal Border for Illegal Crossing Attempt

An American national was arrested at the India-Nepal border for allegedly attempting to cross into Nepal illegally. Identified as Anthony from Missouri, he overstayed his visa. Authorities intercepted him during a routine check, uncovering plans to bypass legal procedures to return to the U.S.

An American citizen named Phelan Travis Anthony was apprehended by Indian authorities while allegedly trying to cross into Nepal illegally. The incident occurred near Chhatri Bridge in Maharajganj during a routine security check by the police.

According to a police statement, Anthony was in violation of immigration laws, having overstayed his visa after arriving in India in August 2025. His authorized stay expired in early February 2026. While in Hyderabad, he was informed of fines related to his overstay, which he could not pay.

Though the U.S. Consulate in Hyderabad offered loan assistance to cover his fines and help him return to the United States, Anthony was unable to commit to repayment. To evade these legal and financial consequences, he attempted to cross into Nepal with the aim of returning to the U.S. Ultimately, his plans were thwarted by local police during a border security operation.
