South Africa's Parliament will host a special intergenerational dialogue this week as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the 1976 June 16 uprising. The event, titled "Youth Voices, Reading and Democracy", will take place in the Good Hope Chamber on Monday and will bring together participants from different generations to reflect on the role of young people in shaping the country's democratic journey.

Organised by Parliament's Library Service in collaboration with external partners, the dialogue will examine the lasting impact of the 1976 student uprising and its contribution to democratic freedoms in South Africa. The gathering will also serve as the official launch of the National Library of South Africa's Reading Ambassadors Programme, an initiative designed to encourage reading and literacy among young people.

National Assembly and NCOP Set for Key Policy Discussions

The National Assembly will convene on Tuesday to consider committee reports, parliamentary decisions and ministerial statements. One of the main items on the agenda is a statement by the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment regarding the recently signed Beneficiation Scheme Framework Agreement involving land claimants of the Kruger National Park.

The agreement seeks to address historical land dispossession while creating opportunities for greater economic participation by affected communities. Members of Parliament will also discuss findings from oversight visits undertaken by defence and correctional services committees. These visits included inspections of military facilities, defence institutions and border deployment operations along the South Africa-Zimbabwe border.

Lawmakers will further consider recommendations relating to the appointment of the Small Enterprise Ombud and review determinations concerning the remuneration of public office-bearers and members of independent constitutional institutions for the 2025/26 financial year. In the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), policy debates scheduled for Tuesday will focus on budget allocations for the South African Police Service, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate and the Civilian Secretariat for Police.

Defence Bill and Oversight Work Feature in Busy Parliamentary Week

Wednesday's programme in the National Assembly will see Ministers from the Social Services Cluster answer questions from Members of Parliament. The session will include ministers responsible for sectors such as health, education, social development, human settlements, sport, arts and culture, and water and sanitation. Policy debates in the NCOP will continue throughout the week, covering departments responsible for public works, infrastructure, tourism, small business development and cooperative governance.

A major legislative matter before the National Assembly on Thursday will be the Defence Amendment Bill. The proposed legislation seeks to strengthen the military justice system by enhancing the independence of military judges and senior military judges.

Parliament's oversight responsibilities will remain a key focus on Friday through two virtual mini-plenary sessions. Members will review reports arising from oversight visits conducted across several provinces, examining service delivery and governance issues.

The week's activities will conclude with a meeting of the South African Speakers' Forum in Johannesburg. The forum brings together leaders from Parliament and provincial legislatures and serves as the highest coordinating body within South Africa's legislative sector. Alongside the scheduled debates and sittings, Parliament has also planned 45 committee meetings, highlighting a busy week of legislative work, oversight and policy discussions.
