Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Jagjivan Ram, a towering Dalit leader of his era, on his birth anniversary on Monday. His effective efforts for the uplift of the exploited and deprived sections of society will always be a source of inspiration, Modi tweeted. A freedom fighter, he was also a strong votary of social justice, the prime minister said. Ram, who was born in 1908 in Bihar, was a noted Congress leader who joined the opposition after the Emergency. He served as deputy prime minister briefly.
