The speaker of Sweden's parliament said on Monday he had asked Social Democrat leader and caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Lofven to try to form a new government.

The leader of the centre-right opposition gave up an attempt at the weekend.

"If Sweden is to get a government, several parties need to change their positions about how to form a government," Speaker Andreas Noren said.
