US House passes defense funding bill; shutdown remains imminent

The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday passed a bill to fund the Department of Defense after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy removed funding for Ukraine at the behest of hardliners in his Republican party.
The bill was one of several to receive a vote in a late night session that will not avert a partial government shutdown beginning Sunday.
