China-US Military Talks: Balancing Rising Tensions

China's defense minister acknowledges the necessity of military-to-military communication with the U.S. amid escalating tensions in the Asia-Pacific. He accused the U.S. of causing friction due to its support for Taiwan and the Philippines, warning against any attempts to create chaos in the region.

In a critical address on Sunday, China's defense minister emphasized the importance of renewed military communications with the United States amidst rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific region. The minister, however, attributed the increasing friction to Washington's support for Taiwan and the Philippines.

Speaking at the Shangri-La defense forum in Singapore, Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun declared through a translator, “We will not allow anyone to bring geopolitical conflicts or any war, whether hot or cold, into our region. We will not allow any country or any force to create conflict and chaos in our region.”

Dong, appointed in December following the abrupt removal of his predecessor Li Shangfu, met with U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin. This marked the first in-person talks between top Chinese and American defense officials since 2022, after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan aggravated Beijing.
