TMC's Haji Nurul Outshines BJP in Basirhat: Mamata's Magic Prevails

TMC's Haji Nurul Islam has emerged victorious in Basirhat, leading with a margin of nearly two lakh votes and effectively dashing the BJP's hopes of making a political statement. Voters in the Basirhat constituency, which shares a porous international border with Bangladesh, were unconvinced by the BJP's allegations against TMC over issues in Sandeshkhali.

Haji Nurul, nominated by TMC instead of sitting MP Nusrat Jahan, attributed his victory to the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and the trust people have in her. "It was not that easy to defeat her only by conspiring; one needed to do some good work," he said, emphasizing that the allegations were viewed as a dirty conspiracy by the BJP.

According to the Election Commission of India, TMC outperformed BJP in almost every assembly constituency within Basirhat, including Sandeshkhali. With over 54 per cent Muslim population, Basirhat has remained a traditional TMC stronghold, which was reflected in the 2019 general elections when TMC secured 54.56 per cent of the total votes.
