In a historic triumph, ZPM candidate Richard Vanlalhmangaiha clinched the lone Lok Sabha seat in Mizoram by a significant margin of 68,288 votes, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Vanlalhmangaiha amassed 2,08,552 votes, outpacing his closest competitor, K Vanlalvena of the Mizo National Front, who secured 1,40,264 votes.
Further detailing the outcome, Congress candidate Lalbiakzama garnered 98,595 votes, while BJP nominee Vanlalhmuaka trailed with 33,533 votes. The voter turnout was recorded at 56.87%, with 8.56 lakh voters participating in the election held on April 19.
Vanlalhmangaiha's landslide victory is rooted in his dominance across 37 assembly segments, leaving only one to the MNF and two to the BJP. Emphasizing a wave of support for ZPM, which assumed power in November last year, he stated, 'The strong wave in favor of the party and its policies garnered massive backing from the people.'
Vanlalhmangaiha declared his intention to remain independent of both the NDA and the Congress-led INDIA bloc if elected. He also expressed a commitment to bringing numerous central projects to Mizoram, reinforcing the local leadership of Chief Minister Lalduhoma and the ZPM. In the previous elections, ZPM had ousted the MNF by securing 27 seats in the 40-member assembly.
This victory marks a significant shift in Mizoram's political landscape, which has largely seen the ruling parties dominate Lok Sabha polls since 1977, except for two instances in 1980 and 1998 when independent candidates, backed by opposition coalitions, emerged victorious.
