S Jaishankar: Architect of India's Assertive Foreign Policy

Since becoming India's external affairs minister in 2019, S Jaishankar has transitioned from being considered a political lightweight to a formidable force in foreign policy. His decisive actions have established a new assertive approach in Indian diplomacy, addressing significant global challenges including China's tactics, West Asia dynamics, and the impact of the Ukraine conflict.

When S Jaishankar stepped up as India's external affairs minister in May 2019, he was viewed as a political lightweight despite his formidable grasp of foreign policy.

Over the past five years, Jaishankar has successfully dismantled that perception, emerging as a key player in shaping an assertive foreign policy while tackling various geo-political challenges with finesse.

A seasoned diplomat with a career spanning four decades, Jaishankar was sworn in as a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet on Sunday. If he retains the external affairs ministry portfolio, his immediate focus will include tackling Chinese aggression along the frontier, safeguarding India's interests in West Asia, and managing the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

Known for his sharpness and efficiency, Jaishankar has won accolades within India, particularly among the youth, for his clear articulation of India's foreign policy priorities, gaining significant popularity through his public addresses and interviews on social media platforms.

As an ardent supporter of Modi, Jaishankar has confidently defended India's stance on complex global issues, from neutralizing Western criticism over India's crude oil purchases from Moscow amid the Ukraine war to developing a robust policy approach against China. His tenure is marked by a strong record of performance.

Moreover, he has successfully integrated discussions on foreign policy into domestic discourse, notably during India's G20 presidency. Currently, he serves as a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat.

Jaishankar's diplomatic journey began with his induction into the Indian Foreign Service in 1977, during which he held key positions such as India's foreign secretary, ambassador to several countries, and other major roles. He also served as the president of Global Corporate Affairs at Tata Sons Pvt Ltd post-retirement.

A graduate of St. Stephen's College and Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jaishankar's accolades include the Padma Shri award in 2019 and authorship of the best-selling book 'The India Way: Strategies for an Uncertain World'.
