National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has dismissed allegations that Engineer Rashid's triumph in the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat bolsters secessionist movements, clarifying that his 'X' post highlighting the victory was intended to stir debate.
Abdullah stressed that the opinions expressed were not his own but meant to foster dialogue. 'They're not my thoughts, and I made that abundantly clear,' Abdullah informed PTI on Monday.
He underlined that his social media post about Rashid's win was meant to ignite a discussion and elevate awareness about the election discourse occurring nationally and globally.
'If I had to voice those views, I would have done so during the campaign. I would have said it in a speech. I put that tweet out there without any regrets,' he maintained.
The NC leader highlighted the significance of people being aware of national and international election discussions.
A controversy erupted after Abdullah posted a news article on social media last week, suggesting Engineer Rashid's win would empower 'secessionists'.
The row emerged after a private TV news agency misattributed the article's excerpts shared by Abdullah as his own views, inciting reactions from mainstream Jammu and Kashmir politicians.
Abdullah reiterated that while Rashid might hold differing opinions, he has sworn the same oath to uphold India's unity as any other politician.
Addressing the social media uproar, Abdullah stressed the importance of being held accountable for his own views, despite opponents distorting his words.
Reflecting on his Lok Sabha defeat from Baramulla, Abdullah acknowledged the vital role of emotional campaigns like Rashid's son's plea to free his jailed father.
'The emotional appeal made by Rashid's son to save his father from the gallows resonated with people. How do you counter that? It would take a heartless person to say otherwise,' he remarked.
When queried about regrets regarding contesting from Baramulla, Abdullah noted that his decision was based on party assessments but acknowledged changes during the campaign period.
'Initially, it was a contest between me and Sajad Lone. Engineer Rashid's campaign became prominent later on,' he explained.
Abdullah accepted the election results, stating he would consider different actions if given another chance, while defending against claims of dynastic politics' rejection.
