Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, despite leading a far-right party, remains centrist on foreign policy, making her a dependable transatlantic ally during Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. This three-day summit aims to address global conflicts, artificial intelligence, and African issues, with a spotlight on Italy's concerns about migration and human trafficking. Climate change and China will also feature prominently.

The G7, consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, is an informal forum for discussing economic and security issues. A key outcome of the summit is the agreement to lend Ukraine USD 50 billion, using frozen Russian assets as collateral. This deal, finalized before the summit, also involves U.S. President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signing a bilateral security agreement. Additionally, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced USD 310 million in nonmilitary aid to Ukraine, aimed at humanitarian, energy, and stabilization needs. This comes just days before the UK election, amid concerns of Sunak losing to the opposition Labour Party.
