BJP President JP Nadda lambasted the Congress on Tuesday, marking the 49th anniversary of the Emergency. He criticized the opposition for nominating K Suresh against NDA's Om Birla in the Lok Sabha speaker election.

Speaking at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Nadda accused Congress of 'hypocrisy and doublespeak' regarding the speaker's election. He questioned whether any prior speaker elections demanded the deputy speaker's consensus before deciding the chair.

Nadda highlighted the Congress's inconsistency in following traditions in states it governs, pointing out that Congress and its allies hold both speaker and deputy speaker positions in several state assemblies.

Revisiting history, Nadda called out the Congress government under Indira Gandhi for stifling democracy by imposing the Emergency on June 25, 1975. He mentioned the sacrifices made by leaders like Morarji Desai and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who were jailed for nearly 19 months for defending democracy.

Nadda emphasized that the RSS had also participated in the struggle to restore democracy, noting that about 1.4 lakh people were arrested under harsh laws. He claimed that democracy was restored when the Congress lost power in the 1977 Lok Sabha elections.

Taking a jab at Rahul Gandhi, Nadda remarked that Gandhi lacks understanding of the country's history and demanded an apology for the imposition of Emergency.
