West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday accused the BJP and a section of the media of defaming the state by highlighting an old mob assault incident from 2021. Speaking to reporters at Kolkata airport, Banerjee said the viral video was taken when Arjun Singh was the BJP MP for Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency.
The BJP denied the allegations and accused the TMC of creating a reign of terror. Banerjee targeted certain TV channels for favoring the BJP and misleading the public, particularly ahead of Wednesday's bypolls.
Banerjee suggested that these media outlets operate out of fear of CBI-ED raids and threatened legal action if they continued their biased reporting. Reacting to the claims, BJP leader Arjun Singh dismissed the allegations as baseless. Police have arrested three people connected to the viral video, including local TMC leader Jayant Singh.
