Former Ukrainian armed forces chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi has taken on a new role as Kyiv’s ambassador to Britain, he announced on the Telegram messaging app on Thursday.

Zaluzhnyi gained immense popularity in Ukraine for leading the military during the critical first hours of Russia's invasion in February 2022. Despite his success on the battlefield, a significant military shakeup in February 2024 saw him replaced as the top commander.

His appointment as ambassador marks a new chapter in his career, where his strategic insights and leadership experience are expected to benefit Ukraine's diplomatic missions in Britain.
