New Coalition Government Set to Take Office in Nepal
Nepal's political landscape shifts as K.P. Sharma Oli is poised to lead a new coalition government following the defeat of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal in a parliamentary vote of confidence. Dahal, in power for twenty months, faced a tumultuous term marked by frequent coalition changes and political instability.
K.P. Sharma Oli is set to lead a new coalition government in Nepal after Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal lost a parliamentary vote of confidence on Friday, ending his 20-month tenure marked by political instability.
Since abolishing its 239-year-old monarchy in 2008, Nepal has seen frequent government changes. Oli's imminent government will be the 14th in just over a decade. China's and India's influence in Nepal's politics continues to be significant as they vie for regional dominance.
Dahal, facing a parliamentary revolt after his largest ally, UML, withdrew support, needed 138 votes to remain in power but secured only 63 out of 258 lawmakers present. Parliament Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire confirmed the vote’s results, signaling the end of Dahal’s term.
This upcoming administration marks Oli's third term as Prime Minister, following a brief alliance with the centrist Nepali Congress. His coalition promises a stabler political future, though Dahal warns it could lean towards authoritarianism.
