Kharge Criticizes Modi Government's J&K Amendments

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the Modi government on Saturday for its recent amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. Kharge claimed this move is a continued betrayal against Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting what he dubbed as "Samvidhan Hatya Diwas" occurring daily under the Modi administration.

Kharge highlighted that the amendments grant more powers to the Lieutenant Governor, suggesting the Modi government aims to delay the restoration of full statehood despite the Supreme Court's mandate for Assembly Elections by September 30th, 2024. He added that even if statehood is restored, the state government would remain significantly controlled by the LG.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the amendments, which enhance the Lieutenant Governor's powers and came into effect on July 12. President Droupadi Murmu approved these changes, which were published in the Official Gazette the same day. These amendments are seen as a precursor to the anticipated assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
