Former US president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was shot at during his rally in Pennsylvania, with a bullet piercing the upper part of his right ear, on Saturday.
In his first statement issued on social media platform Truth Social, 78-year-old Trump expressed gratitude to the US Secret Service for their swift action in saving his life.
“I want to thank the United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response to the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania,” the former president stated.
Trump was injured after multiple gunshots were fired during his election rally in Butler. He was immediately escorted out of the venue by the US Secret Service. “Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country,” he added.
According to Anthony Guglielmi, spokesperson for the US Secret Service, the incident happened around 6:15 pm local time, with the suspected shooter firing multiple rounds from an elevated position outside the venue.
“US Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased. The US Secret Service quickly responded with protective measures and Former President Trump is safe. One spectator was killed, and two others were critically injured,” he said, noting that the FBI has been notified and an investigation is underway.
Trump mentioned that nothing is currently known about the shooter, who is deceased.
“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew something was wrong when I heard a whizzing sound, felt shots, and immediately sensed the bullet ripping through my skin. There was much bleeding, so I realized what was happening. God bless America!” Trump remarked.
Thousands of Trump supporters were present at the rally when the incident, broadcast live on news channels, occurred. The bullet struck his ear, leading the former president to duck as Secret Service agents surrounded him. Trump was heard making comments such as “Let me get my shoes,” before being led to safety. He was seen pumping his fist to the crowd.
The shocking event took place just two days before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Trump will formally become the party’s nominee.
Eyewitness Colleen Phillips (62) said she was about eight rows from the stage when she heard the gunfire. “We had a little prayer circle for President Trump,” Phillips shared. “I don’t know what’s wrong with people.” Another eyewitness, Mark McEvoy (50), reported hearing eight to ten shots. “I saw Trump go down, but then I saw him get up and he raised his hand to signal he was ok,” McEvoy told the Financial Daily.
