President Joe Biden is set to address the nation Sunday afternoon following a Situation Room briefing on the apparent assassination attempt on his predecessor, Donald Trump.
The White House announced Biden's planned remarks after homeland security and law enforcement officials briefed him. The administration continues to call for national unity and condemn the shocking act of violence.
Vice President Kamala Harris joined Biden in receiving updates from top investigators, including Attorney General Merrick Garland, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and FBI Director Christopher Wray. Others present were White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and US Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle.
Biden swiftly denounced the shooting, engaging in a conversation with Trump Saturday night. Meanwhile, his campaign team is assessing the political ramifications of the attack on Trump, whom Biden aims to defeat in the forthcoming November election.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Biden's reelection campaign announced a halt to “all outbound communications” and a swift pullback of television ads. The duration of this suspension remains unclear.
Harris also postponed a planned trip to Florida to meet with Republican women voters, as per a campaign official.
Investigation into the incident is still in early stages. Critics have brought up Biden's July 8 private call to donors, where he mentioned it was “time to put Trump in the bullseye,” illustrating the heightened scrutiny Trump has avoided.
In the donor call, Biden stated: “I have one job and that's to beat Donald Trump ... I'm absolutely certain I'm the best person to be able to do that.'' He added, “So, we're done talking about the debate. It's time to put Trump in the bullseye. He's gotten away with doing nothing for the last 10 days except ride around in his golf cart, bragging about scores he didn't score … Anyway I won't get into his golf game.”
