Veteran communist politician K.P. Sharma Oli was sworn in as Nepal's prime minister on Monday, aiming to bring political stability to the Himalayan nation. This is the fifth government in Kathmandu in as many years, underscoring the country's volatile political climate.
Oli, who leads the moderate Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist), assumed office administered by President Ramchandra Paudel. He announced a 22-member cabinet with key positions awarded to his coalition partners. Bishnu Paudel was named finance minister, while Arzu Rana Deuba, wife of Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba, was made foreign minister.
Despite past political instability, observers like Geja Sharma Wagle see this new coalition as a pivotal moment. If it fails, he warns, it could signal the broader failure of Nepal's current political system.
