In the wake of an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, crypto stocks, prison operators, and other shares surged during premarket trading on Monday. The Republican candidate's odds of winning saw an increase, leading investors to place more trades betting on a Trump victory. Despite the attack, Trump appeared unscathed and his campaign confirmed his well-being.
Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), where Trump holds a majority stake, saw a 67% rise. TMTG, parent company of Truth Social, has gained 75% this year. Retail traders are hopeful for Trump's victory against incumbent President Joe Biden in the upcoming election.
Bitcoin and other crypto stocks also surged following the attack. Companies like Coinbase Global and bitcoin miners Riot Platforms Inc and Marathon Digital saw gains between 6% and 7%. Investment analyst Dan Coatsworth noted that Trump is perceived as pro-crypto, which has driven traders to seek assets that could benefit from his potential return to power.
Remarkably, the broader U.S. market remained composed despite the tumultuous events. Futures tied to the S&P 500 showed a modest 0.4% increase. Shares in gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson Brands rose 2.7%, while prison stocks Geo Group and CoreCivic each saw a 7% rise, anticipated to benefit from Trump's strict immigration policies.
Additionally, software firm Phunware, engaged by Trump's 2020 election campaign, experienced a 50% jump, and the conservative-favored video-sharing platform Rumble increased by 18%. As events unfold, market reactions continue to reflect investor confidence in a Trump presidency.
