Renowned pianist Evgeny Kissin has been labeled a 'foreign agent' by Russia due to his outspoken support for Ukraine and opposition to the war, state news agency TASS reported. Kissin, 52, who was born in Moscow and holds British and Israeli citizenship, is considered one of the world's premier concert pianists.
The musician has lived outside Russia for years and has often criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a recent Facebook post, Kissin expressed his belief that Ukraine would endure despite the horrors inflicted by Russian forces.
Russia's 'foreign agent' designation, which implies espionage, has been applied to hundreds of individuals and organizations accused of foreign-backed subversive political activities. Author Boris Akunin and musician Boris Grebenshchikov are among other notable figures affected, while theatre director Zhenya Berkovich and playwright Svetlana Petriychuk were recently sentenced to six years in prison for 'justifying terrorism.'
