Expressing strong concern over the spike in terror incidents in the Jammu region, the Congress on Tuesday criticized the BJP-led government at the Centre, alleging its failure in bolstering the security network.
Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Vikar Rasool Wani, in a press conference, urged the government to take immediate measures to control the situation.
In the past 45 days alone, the Jammu region has witnessed 15 terror incidents, resulting in the deaths of 10 security personnel, including two officers, alongside nine pilgrims, and injuries to 58 others.
Wani said, “We are deeply concerned about the escalating terror activities in the region. The security situation in Jammu is deteriorating,” attributing this to governmental failures. Moreover, the Congress announced the intention to release a people's manifesto for the forthcoming assembly elections.
The Supreme Court has instructed the central government to complete the election process in the Union Territory by September 30, though the Election Commission has yet to announce the poll schedule. Wani emphasized the need for timely elections, recalling more challenging past elections as a stance against terrorism.
Wani assured that promises made in the people’s manifesto would be promptly fulfilled, accusing the BJP of causing significant societal hardships in the past decade. He stated the Congress would consult the public to incorporate their demands in the manifesto.
“We have formed two committees for the Jammu province to engage with residents across districts for essential feedback,” he noted, “and a similar sub-committee for the Kashmir province will be set up within the next 15 days to address broader concerns.”
Wani reaffirmed the Congress's readiness for assembly elections and called for preparations from the party cadre. He underlined the demand for restoring statehood to J-K before elections to empower its people fully.
