Congress' Jammu and Kashmir in-charge Bharat Singh Solanki has alleged that the BJP-led NDA government is attempting to run the Union Territory by proxy through the recently enhanced powers given to the lieutenant governor.
Earlier this month, the central government significantly enhanced the authority of the lieutenant governor in Jammu and Kashmir, allowing decisions on crucial matters including police and sanctioning prosecutions.
The opposition has heavily criticized this, stating it disempowers the local populace. Solanki accused the BJP of avoiding elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Additionally, the Supreme Court has mandated the restoration of statehood and assembly elections by September 30, 2024. Solanki is attending the Pradesh Congress Committee's political affairs meeting in the region.
He also alleged that BJP leaders have failed to fulfill their promises to bring prosperity and end terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Solanki mentioned that Rahul Gandhi has been invited to the Union Territory by local leaders.
Congress plans to start a mass contact program to create a 'peoples' manifesto' for the upcoming assembly elections and will decide on alliances based on this feedback.
