Venezuela in Turmoil: Protests Erupt Over Disputed Election
Protesters across Venezuela are demanding President Nicolas Maduro concede defeat after allegations of election fraud. The opposition claims its candidate won by a wide margin. The unrest has resulted in fatalities and ongoing clashes with security forces. International calls for transparency and potential sanctions loom.
Protests erupted across Venezuela on Tuesday as citizens took to the streets to demand President Nicolas Maduro acknowledge his loss in Sunday's election. Armed with flags and fervor, opposition supporters accused Maduro's government of electoral fraud after the electoral authority declared him the winner with 51% of the vote.
The opposition, citing their tally, claims candidate Edmundo Gonzalez won by more than double Maduro's votes. Amidst the upheaval, rights group Foro Penal reported at least 11 deaths related to the election and subsequent protests. Both Maduro and his chief legislative ally have accused opposition leaders of inciting violence.
International pressure mounts for a transparent vote count. Some countries are offering asylum to opposition leaders, while the U.S. considers fresh sanctions. Maduro, defending his contested victory, has called for further marches and blamed external influences, including billionaire Elon Musk, for election system disruptions without providing evidence.
