Middle East Tensions Surge After Hamas Leader’s Assassination
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasizes the need for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas to prevent further violence in the Middle East. The recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, allegedly by Israel, has escalated tensions. Iran has vowed retaliation, while protests erupted in Istanbul.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken appealed for 'all parties' in the Middle East to avoid escalatory actions that could plunge the region into further conflict, emphasizing that a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas is essential to break the cycle of violence and suffering.
The remarks followed the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Palestinian militia representatives held prayers for Haniyeh, amid fears that the assassination could spark an all-out regional war. Haniyeh's killing, suspected to be carried out by Israel, has led Iran to threaten retaliation.
Meanwhile, thousands protested in Istanbul against the assassination, and Iran's Parliament Speaker accused the US of being complicit. Blinken has been in contact with regional leaders to secure a truce and prevent further escalation.
