The political landscape in West Bengal is heating up as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) clash over a controversial proposal involving North Bengal. Locket Chatterjee, the West Bengal General Secretary of BJP, has affirmed that the party does not support the division of the state. 'We want to develop West Bengal along the vision of Syama Prasad Mukherjee,' Chatterjee told ANI.
Earlier on Monday, the West Bengal Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a two-line resolution against any division of the state. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reiterated her stance on the issue, saying, 'We will not allow the partition of West Bengal.' The resolution sparked a vehement protest from BJP MLAs, who criticized the motion's language implying the central government's interest in separating North Bengal.
The debate escalated with opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari's defense of the state's inclusion in the northeast council, citing financial benefits from the central budget. Meanwhile, TMC's Akhil Giri faced backlash for his derogatory remarks against a woman forest ranger and President Droupadi Murmu. Giri, who resigned amid the controversy, remains unapologetic, fueling BJP's accusations of a culture of misconduct within TMC.
