Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra vocally criticized Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday, claiming the new budget neglects the Indian populace while favoring regressive changes. Moitra argued the budget fails to address the needs of the middle and lower classes, calling it more of a 'save the chair' budget for the current government.
Highlighting critical issues, Moitra said the imbalance in India's tax system disadvantages common people. She pointed out that the middle class now bears a higher tax burden than wealthy corporations, with an alarming 55% contribution to direct taxes. Furthermore, high GST on life and medical insurance has added insult to injury, she claimed.
Moitra also condemned decreased allocations for social sector schemes and inadequate defense funding. She warned that this compromises both national security and the welfare of vulnerable groups.
