Jaishankar Strengthens India-Maldives Ties Amid Changing Dynamics

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the deep partnership between India and the Maldives during his three-day visit to reset bilateral relations. Jaishankar reiterated that the Maldives is a cornerstone of India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy, amidst the backdrop of the pro-China President Mohamed Muizzu's recent tenure.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar affirmed the robust partnership between India and the Maldives during a press conference on Friday. He stressed that the collaboration is vital for mutual welfare and interests and highlighted that the Maldives remains a cornerstone of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.

Jaishankar arrived in the Maldives for a three-day official visit, aiming to reset and strengthen bilateral relations following the induction of pro-China President Mohamed Muizzu last year. The visit marks the first high-level diplomatic engagement between the two nations since Muizzu assumed office.

The trip follows President Muizzu's visit to India in June for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. Jaishankar noted that the partnership has enabled both countries to respond swiftly and effectively to various challenges, a testament to their enduring cooperation.
