FACTBOX-US House of Representatives races to watch in 2024

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives will defend a narrow majority in the Nov. 5 elections. Below are some of the races to watch as Republicans and Democrats battle for control of the chamber.

MINNESOTA - OMAR STARES DOWN FAMILIAR RIVAL In Minneapolis, Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, a member of Congress' left-wing "Squad," held off a primary challenge from Don Samuels, a former city councillor who came within a few percentage points of beating her in the 2022 primary. Although Omar has been a vocal critic of Israel, the race didn't see the same levels of spending from pro-Israel groups as others.

WISCONSIN - FILLING GALLAGHER'S SEAT Republican lawmaker Mike Gallagher, who had been considered a rising star in his party, retired from Congress on April 25.

Wisconsin scheduled a special election to fill Gallagher's seat through the end of his term for Nov. 5, the same day as the general election. The concurrent special election and general election means the same candidates will appear twice on the ballot.

Tony Wied, a former gas station owner who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, won the Republican nomination for the race on Aug.13; Kristin Lyerly, an obstetrician/gynecologist, won an uncontested race for the Democratic nomination. It is considered a safe seat for Republicans.

NEW YORK AND MISSOURI - DEFEATS FOR THE LEFT Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York became the first Squad member to lose his seat after he was ousted in a June 26 primary by George Latimer, a centrist with deep roots in the district in New York City's northern suburbs.

In Missouri, fellow Squad member and two-term Democratic Representative Cori Bush was defeated in the Aug. 6 primary by St. Louis prosecutor Wesley Bell. Both challengers were heavily supported by pro-Israel groups, which poured millions of dollars into defeating Bowman and Bush, both vocal opponents of Israel's military campaign in Gaza. Liberal groups decried the heavy spending by pro-Israel groups on attack ads against the pair. Bowman also battled negative publicity after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges after he pulled a fire alarm ahead of a vote in Congress last year.

Both Latimer and Bell are expected to win in the November general election, as both seats are considered safely Democratic. WASHINGTON STATE - REPUBLICAN BID TO UNSEAT GLUESENKAMP PEREZ

Republicans in the 3rd District on Aug. 6 chose Joe Kent, a former member of the U.S. Army Special Forces, to take on Democratic Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, who narrowly won the seat in 2022. Kent, who lost to Gluesenkamp Perez in 2022, has been endorsed by the state Republican Party. He has challenged the results of the 2020 election and raised conspiracy theories about the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The district is located in the southwestern part of the state. ARIZONA - DEMOCRATS AIM AT SCHWEIKERT

In Arizona's 1st District, Republican Representative David Schweikert, who was first elected in 2010, is considered one of the Democrats' top targets. Schweikert narrowly won his reelection bid in 2022. He easily won his primary on July 30. Amish Shah, a doctor and state lawmaker, will take on Schweikert after winning the Democratic primary over a half-dozen other candidates.

In the nearby 3rd District, a winner has yet to be determined in the Democratic primary between Yassamin Ansari, a city councillor, and Raquel Teran, a former state lawmaker. The winner will likely succeed Representative Ruben Gallego, who is vacating the Phoenix-area seat to run for the U.S. Senate. In the 8th District, Republicans picked Abe Hamadeh, their unsuccessful 2022 candidate for state attorney general, over Blake Masters, who made a failed U.S. Senate run in 2022. Both candidates had been endorsed by Trump. The seat is considered safely Republican.

NEW YORK - THE SUBURBS Former CNN journalist John Avlon won the Democratic nomination to take on Republican Representative Nick LaLota in a district covering a number of suburbs of New York City.

Democrats are aiming to seize back several districts in that state in their quest to recapture the House majority. Republican George Santos, who was expelled from Congress in December after being indicted over corruption charges, ended his long-shot independent bid to unseat LaLota in April. COLORADO - LAUREN BOEBERT'S SWAP

Firebrand conservative Lauren Boebert easily won a crowded Republican primary in Colorado's 4th District in June after switching from the 3rd District, where she faced a tough primary opponent. The seat in the 4th District is currently vacant, as incumbent Republican Ken Buck left Congress before his two-year term was up. Greg Lopez, a Republican former mayor, won the special election to serve out the remainder of Buck's term but will not run in November. The seat is considered safely Republican.

VIRGINIA - GOOD LOSES HIS SEAT Bob Good, the head of the far-right House Freedom Caucus, lost his Virginia seat in July in a primary challenge from former Navy SEAL John McGuire. Good made some powerful enemies when he endorsed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the Republican presidential primary and was among the eight House Republicans who voted to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Trump and McCarthy threw their weight behind McGuire.

The district is considered safely Republican. OHIO REPUBLICAN FACEOFF

Michael Rulli, a Republican state senator, won a June 11 special election over Democrat Michael Kripchak to replace Representative Bill Johnson, a Republican who stepped down to head Youngstown State University. Rulli and Kripchak will again face off in November's general election.

The district is heavily Republican.
