Security has been tightened across Assam as all districts have been put on high alert following a boycott call for Independence Day by the banned ULFA (Independent), a senior police official revealed on Wednesday.

While ULFA(I)'s boycott of Independence and Republic Days is routine, security has been beefed up based on intelligence inputs indicating militants of the outfit are camping near the state's border with Arunachal Pradesh, he said.

In an e-mailed press release, both ULFA(I) and the NSCN/GPRN have urged a boycott of Independence Day celebrations in Assam, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh. Additionally, a bandh has been announced from 12:01 am to 6 pm on August 15.

Director General of Police G.P. Singh has recently visited districts in Upper Assam to assess the security situation. Patrolling along international and inter-state borders has intensified, and vehicular checks at entry and exit points have increased. Authorities are instructed to ensure stringent security at parade grounds for the celebrations. Despite a decrease in security threats due to diminished militancy and peace accords, ULFA(I) has yet to engage in talks, despite Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's invitation for negotiations after his inauguration in May 2021. The Chief Minister is scheduled to preside over the central Independence Day function and hoist the Tricolour at Khanapara Veterinary Ground.
