Bangladesh's tax authorities have lifted a 17-year restriction on the bank accounts of Khaleda Zia, Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), according to reports by the Daily Star newspaper.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued directives to banks on Monday to unfreeze the accounts. These accounts were originally frozen in August 2007 by a caretaker government backed by the Army.
This decision follows mass political upheaval that culminated in the toppling of longtime rival Sheikh Hasina. With no pending tax investigations, the NBR has advised immediate action to unlock the accounts.
