Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Tuesday, declared he would not permit 'Miya' Muslims to take control of Assam, sparking controversy in the state assembly.
The comments came during discussions on adjournment motions proposed by opposition parties regarding the law and order situation after the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon. Sarma dismissed claims that crime rates have escalated, stating they remain proportional to the population growth.
The heated debate saw members from both sides rush to the Well of the House, leading Speaker Biswajit Daimary to suspend proceedings for 10 minutes. Congress, AIUDF, CPI(M), and Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi had demanded discussions on the rising crime rates, including crimes against women.
