Jake Sullivan, President Biden's national security adviser, arrived in China on Tuesday for crucial talks aimed at stabilizing U.S.-China relations. Relations have faced severe strains during Biden's term, making Sullivan's trip highly significant.
Welcomed by Yang Tao, a top official from China's foreign ministry, and U.S. Ambassador Nicholas Burns, Sullivan's agenda includes meetings with high-ranking Chinese officials like Wang Yi to foster strategic communication. No groundbreaking announcements are expected, but the talks could pave the way for a future summit between Biden and China's Xi Jinping.
The U.S. aims to avoid crises and maintain steady momentum in bilateral relations. The Biden administration has been tough on China, restricting access to advanced technology and challenging its moves concerning Taiwan and the South China Sea. Meetings began to thaw relations in May 2023 and continued through multiple sessions in third countries.
