Sri Lanka Prepares for Closely Contested Presidential Election

Sri Lanka's Election Commission has announced that all preliminary preparations for the upcoming presidential election on September 21 have been completed. With 38 candidates and an anticipated closely contested race, notably among three frontrunners, the election is set to be a significant event in the nation's political landscape.

Sri Lanka's Election Commission confirmed on Thursday that all preliminaries for the upcoming presidential election on September 21 are complete.

Seventeen million registered voters across 22 districts will decide among 38 candidates vying for the presidency. Initial arrangements have been finalized and relevant officials notified, according to Commission Chairperson RMAL Ratnayake.

If no candidate secures over 50% of votes initially, the commission will count second and third preference votes. Historically, winners were declared in the first round, but this year’s race is expected to be tighter with the rising influence of the Marxist JVP party.
