Central Bank Clash: Alleged Misconduct Sparks Legal Inquiry
The National Bank of Poland has notified prosecutors about potential criminal actions by Szymon Holownia and Zdzislaw Gawlik. Governor Adam Glapinski faces several accusations, which he denies. The central bank claims the actions regarding his Tribunal referral lack legal grounds, prompting further inquiry.
The National Bank of Poland announced on Friday that it had informed prosecutors about possible criminal actions by the speaker of parliament and the head of a parliamentary committee. These actions relate to efforts to bring central bank governor Adam Glapinski before a tribunal.
Glapinski, who has strong ties to opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, is accused of lacking independence, violating rules against financing government borrowing, and misleading the finance ministry. He has firmly denied these allegations and called for respect towards the bank's independence.
The central bank's statement targets Szymon Holownia, the speaker of the lower house, and Zdzislaw Gawlik, chairman of the Committee on Constitutional Responsibility. The bank alleges their actions were illegal and unfounded. Holownia's spokesperson affirmed his commitment to defending the constitutional competences of the parliament.
