USAID Funding Freeze Stirs Press Freedom Battles in Eastern Europe
The halt of USAID grants has disrupted Hungarian investigative media outlet Atlatszo, impacting a portion of their budget. Trump's moves against USAID have wider implications, affecting media and NGO efforts in Eastern Europe. Orban's government may further tighten media control, jeopardizing press freedom and critical journalism.
Hungarian investigative outlet Atlatszo is grappling with a financial crisis following the suspension of USAID grants, a result of U.S. President Donald Trump's directive to wind down the agency. Last month, Trump froze the majority of USAID's funding, leaving NGOs and media organizations, like Atlatszo, in turmoil.
Atlatszo, which investigates corruption and government-linked oligarchs, relies partly on indirect USAID funding, covering 10-15% of its budget in 2023-2024. The outlet is now seeking alternative donors and increasing crowdfunding efforts to stay afloat. Trump's initiative might have far-reaching effects, reshaping the media landscape in Hungary and beyond.
The European Federation of Journalists has urged European entities to step in and support independent media, fearing that Trump's move will destabilize the global media ecosystem. Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a Trump ally, has moved to eliminate foreign-funded NGOs and media, which could further restrict press freedom in the country.
