Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in high-stakes discussions over the situation in Ukraine, as well as efforts to dismantle economic barriers imposed by previous U.S. administrations. This dialogue marks a critical step toward resolving ongoing bilateral issues.
U.S. and Russian officials are slated to commence negotiations on ending the conflict in Ukraine, a move initiated by President Donald Trump, who recently communicated directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite these talks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed concern over his country's exclusion from the dialogue.
The conversation between Lavrov and Rubio also covered potential collaborations on other international issues and sought to restore a respectful dialogue, following directives from their respective presidents. They agreed to address the challenges faced by diplomatic missions in both nations, indicating a mutual commitment to resolving ongoing diplomatic hurdles.
