In a crucial Lok Sabha session, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi alongside other opposition leaders, vocalized the need to scrutinize India's voter list. The contention centers on alleged irregularities such as duplicate Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers, raising fears about the fairness of upcoming elections in several states.
Allegations flew thick and fast. TMC's Saugata Roy implicated inconsistencies in the voter lists of Maharashtra and Haryana, suggesting the potential for similar issues in West Bengal. Adding to the chorus, AAP's Sanjay Singh accused the ruling party and Election Commission of fabricating voter identities, possibly swaying the democratic process.
Despite the uproar, the Election Commission clarified that matching EPIC numbers do not equate to duplicate entries. The Commission attributed the confusion to historical administrative practices before the centralized ERONET system adoption, assuring that necessary corrective measures are underway.
