The Shiv Sena (UBT) has criticized the aggressive backlash against comedian Kunal Kamra over his parody song targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Highlighting Prime Minister Modi's statement that criticism is essential to democracy, the party questioned the extreme responses from Shinde's supporters, including the vandalism of a studio.
The editorial in Saamana recalled the political turmoil caused by Shinde's 2022 rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray. This led to a split in the Shiv Sena and the collapse of the Thackeray-led government, with Shinde aligning with the BJP. The editorial underscored the irony of Shinde's supporters attacking Kamra while the BJP quietly observed the drama.
Concerns over freedom of expression were further emphasized as the editorial questioned the actions of Maharashtra's home minister, Fadnavis. With the vandalism quickly followed by civic action against the studio premises, the Sena criticized the perceived erosion of law and order in Maharashtra.
